iESM Working Group Endorses New iESM Guidance
At its September 2025 meeting, the iESM Working Group authorised an update to the core iESM Guidance provided by Volume 1 – Principles and Process. The changes included in Issue 1.5 ensure that iESM remains aligned with the latest guidance for engineering safety in the rail industry and continues to reflect industry good practice.
At the same meeting, the Working Group also endorsed a new publication: Application Note 12 – Management of Competence. This guidance supports organisations in managing engineering safety by ensuring that staff involved are competent in the roles they perform.
Application Note 12 provides practical, structured guidance for defining, developing, and assessing competencies in engineering safety management. It draws on recognised good practice from a range of authoritative sources, including the International Council on Systems Engineering (INCOSE) and the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET), offering a clear approach to establishing competency frameworks, assessing capability, and supporting ongoing professional development.
The updated Volume 1 and new Application Note 12 reinforce iESM’s commitment to supporting the rail industry by aligning with contemporary industry expectations and providing actionable tools for practitioners.
Both new documents are now available to download.
